Pathways to Knowledge Information Skills Model (Pappas and Tepe, 1995.)
Teaming with the Follett Software Company, Professor Marjorie Pappas and Follett’s Director of Curriculum Ann Tepe developed an elaborate model of information literacy complete with recommended strategies, forms of expression, and methods of teaching and learning embedded in the model. The stages in this model include appreciation, pre-search, search, interpretation, communication and evaluation. This model is a non- linear process. Students continuously explore and reassess at each step. Teacher/ Media Specialist stress the importance of questioning, authentic learning, reflection, and non-linearity. This model emphasizes student centered learning.
1. Appreciation & Enjoyment- Individuals appreciate literature, the arts, nature and information in the world around them through varied and multiple formats.
4. Interpretation- This stage allows searchers to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information to determine relevancy and usefulness to their topic.
2. Pre-Search- This stage allows learners to make a connection between their topic and prior knowledge.
5. Communication- This stage allows learners to organize, apply, and present new knowledge relevant to their research.
3. Search- Plan and implement a search strategy to find information relevant to their research question or information need.
6.Evaluation- Self and Peer Evaluations should occur throughout each stage.
